Unchained Reaction Episode Pits Artists Against Engineers

Los Angeles 3/31/2012 12:08 AM GMT (TransWorldNews)

Los Angeles, CA (March 30, 2012) – Bruce Gray, well-known kinetic artist, has been invited to appear on Discovery Channel Television’s popular new show, Unchained Reaction. The episode, called “Take Flight,” airs on April 8, 2012 and pits a team of accomplished engineers against a group of artists to see who can build an elaborate chain reaction machine that will get off the ground.

Bruce Gray, a Los Angeles sculptor and metal artist, is known for his unusual kinetic sculptures, including dramatic mobiles and stabiles, amazing gravity-defying suspended super power magnet sculptures, and rolling ball sculptures. His work is included in over 1100 private and corporate art collections worldwide. Many of his sculptures have appeared in hundreds of movies, TV shows, music videos, and commercials. Derek Alger, writing for Pif Magazine, said, “Gray is known and admired for creating diverse artistic designs using a variety of materials, including magnets, aluminum, stainless steel, and scrap metal, and well as chimes and metal balls...Gray’s specialties include creating oversized renditions of everyday objects, such as animals, large keys, insects, gigantic shoes, and swiss cheese in metal.”

Guest judges are chosen for their expertise or prominence in the field they are judging. Mr. Gray, as a world-renowned artist, will appear with the show’s regular judges Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. Savage and Hyneman formerly hosted the entertaining science series MythBusters. Unchained Reaction is a science and engineering reality game show. Two teams work with identical sets of tools, and have five days to complete the assigned task.

Says Mr. Gray, “I consider myself to be a visual scientist, relentlessly exploring as many forms of artistic expression as I can. Sculpture is not my career; it’s my life. I am obsessed with creating as many new sculptures as possible. I view appearing on Unchained Reaction as a chance, in a sense, to participate in another new art form.”

In this, the fourth of the series of six episodes, the challenging task presented to the two teams is related to flight. The teams are Freeman, a group of friends from various engineering fields, and T-5, a group of Taos, New Mexico, artists. All of the episodes require participants to use innovation, creativity, and knowledge to build large contraptions. Unchained Reaction premiered in March 2012 and has been well-received.
