South African authorities arrested seven boys Tuesday in the town of Soweto after a video of them raping a mentally ill girl went viral. An eighth suspect turned himself in to police. The video was passed among school children before one girl’s mother saw the footage and notified the local tabloid The Daily Sun. The tabloid then alerted police.

The 17-year-old girl in the video was reported missing a month ago by her mother, according to Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela. She was found in the home of the man who turned himself in and is currently being treated at a hospital.

Makhubela said Soweto residents helped identify the boys in the video. All eight suspects, who range in age from 14 to 20, have been charged with kidnapping and rape.
