At least 13 al Qaeda militants were killed Wednesday in southern Yemen in an airstrike carried out by United States drones. Security officials say the drone strike targeted an al Qaeda training site in the province of Abyan.
A Yemeni presidential aide says Wednesday’s strike is part of a series of planned attacks on al Qaeda militants. Attacks earlier this week in the districts of Zinjibar and Lowder left 7 militants dead. Additional strikes are reportedly planned for other sites in those districts and in Jaar district.
"This is part of the strategy to uproot al Qaeda from areas they control. The Yemeni government is giving the green light for the attacks and targets are chosen carefully,” the Yemeni aide told CNN.
