Art San Diego announces the 2012 Spotlight Artists, one of the most interesting programs of the contemporary art fair that gives collectors a focused look at several cutting-edge emerging artists who will each be creating a site-specific solo exhibition at the Fair in September. This year all the Spotlight Artists are represented by Los Angeles galleries.
Spotlight Artists are selected by Curatorial Director Marcela Quiroz Luna. She states, “This year our selected array of Spotlights–all represented by LA galleries–converge in various aesthetic interests that are crucial to understand the urban approach our 2012 edition sustains. Essentialist depictions, raw materiality’s, intimate forms of representation and a pensive manner of conveying the narrative qualities of their subjects are some of the nerves that connect our featuring artists in a rather silent an unpretentious way.”
Art San Diego 2012 Spotlight Artists Include: Jennifer Celio represented by Katherine Cone Gallery; David McDonald represented by Carter & Citizen; Charles LaBelle represented by Walter Maciel Gallery; David Lamelas represented by Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art; Christopher Russell represented by Luis De Jesus Los Angeles.
About Art San Diego:
The 4th annual ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair, presented by UBS Financial Services, will return September 6 through 9, 2012 at Balboa Park – the cultural center of San Diego. The Fair launches on September 6th, with a preview party that provides patrons and collectors the opportunity to preview and purchase exhibited artworks prior to the Fair's public opening. The Opening Night VIP will benefit Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the region’s premiere contemporary art venue, and will feature hors d'ouevres catered by Giuseppe's Fine Catering and beverages hosted by St. Petersburg Vodka.
The stage for ASD is Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre cultural and recreational oasis in the heart of San Diego — the largest such urban park in America. Balboa Park features a wide variety of museums, exhibitions, performing arts, world-famous gardens, recreational facilities, restaurants, and other attractions that serve over 12 million visitors annually. With New Art City, ASD aims to insert itself as a key actor in this production, nurturing and strengthening San Diego’s art scene with a dynamic agenda. In 2012 we anticipate that more than 60 leading galleries from the USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia will be taking part. In addition to the gallery booths, special features include gallery-curated exhibitions, “Spotlight Artists” featured in solo-artist exhibitions, video-based works featured in “URBAN(E)SCAPES Short Film Program”, “Art Labs” feature special curated projects by 9 leading San Diego-based art institutions, alternative spaces, and universities within the fair, and the introduction of emerging artists and curators with the LaunchPad Program.
