Many people think the only reason they visit the dentist is to get their teeth cleaned and their cavities filled, but they couldn't be more wrong.
Today, the dental clinics people have come to know and love are being transformed into a beauty parlor of sorts, especially for those seeking cosmetic procedures to improve their smile.
"In the past five years the number of people seeking cosmetic procedures in my office has increased by 300 percent," said Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa family dentistry expert.
Cosmetic dentistry procedures were initially seen as something only celebrities or the wealthy could afford, but just about anyone can afford them now, said Li, as an Ottawa tooth whitening dentist.
The top three cosmetic procedures offered by the sedation dentistry professional in Ottawa dental centers are:
- Teeth whitening. In as little as one treatment, patients can whiten their teeth by up to three shades. This procedure is either performed in the office using a concentrated peroxide gel or it can be done at home using custom made plastic trays and a whitening gel.
- Tooth bonding. Bonding is a tooth-colored material used to change the color of teeth or fill in gaps. This procedure is also used to close spaces between teeth, change a tooth's color and shape or repair a tooth that is chipped or decayed.
- Porcelain veneers. This procedure has the longest life expectancy of all restorations. They are thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom-made in a dental laboratory. They are bonded to the teeth and can completely transform a smile.
The patient's desired result and condition of their teeth will dictate which cosmetic dentistry procedure is right for them, said Li. The best time to address any concerns the patient has with their smile is during their consultation, as this is when all procedures are discussed.
