Los Angeles, CA- Musician Kenny G, known for his smooth jazz-style, filed for divorce from his wife of twenty years, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
Kenny G, whose last name is Gorelick, separated from his wife Balynda Helene Benson-Gorelick this past January, but apparently the couple wasn’t able to reconcile. Balynda actually requested the separation.
In the divorce papers, filed on August 9th in Los Angeles Superior, cited irreconcilable differences as their reason for divorce, as reported by TMZ and People.com.
Kenny G is requesting joint custody of one of their two sons 14 year-old, Noah.
The couple married in 1992, court documents state they have a prenuptial agreement. But Kenny has hired Laura Wasser, divorce lawyer to the stars and has asked that Balynda’s right to spousal support be terminated by the courts because of their prenup. TMZ says this is a significant issue since Kenny is worth an estimated $50 million.
Generally, couples sign prenuptial agreements to avoid divorce battles, but they can be contested, which can drag out dissolution. Many couples object to prenuptial agreements for a variety of reasons mainly because they believe it violates a sense of trust and because it seems to be unromantic.
However, prenuptials protect your assets and rights if divorce is inevitable. There are many benefits to these contracts, which allow you to pre-determine what amount of support and assets a spouse will retain after a split. It also and allows the couple to settle their divorce quickly.
