Turkish officials say an overloaded migrant boat sank just 160 feet off the coast of Menderes township on Thursday, leaving at least 60 people dead. The intended destination of the boat is unknown. The 39-foot long vessel was carrying more than 100 migrants from Syria, Iraq and Palestine when it struck rock and sank shortly before 6 a.m. local time.
"The latest death toll we have is 60 people, including 11 men, 18 women and 31 children, including three babies," Menderes governor Tahsin Kurtbeyoglu told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Forty-six people survived the accident and have been detained by police. The boat’s captain and one crew member were among the survivors. Two migrants have been hospitalized for unspecified reasons.
