Alcohol Rehab | Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center
As the new semester begins, colleges and universities nationwide are faced with new students who are new to their campus as well as their policies, including those related to alcohol consumption.
“Binge drinking isn’t a new challenge for colleges, it’s just one that is renewed every semester with a new set of students,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab
and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And, while the challenge is renewed, the approach to combat the challenge must also be renewed. Previously, many colleges relied on self-restraint as a primary line of defense for underage and binge drinking. Now, many of those same universities are enacting policies that will severely limit the exposure of underage students to alcohol. For example, Princeton University is one of a growing number of colleges that has banned freshmen from joining fraternities and sororities, hoping to curb the incidence of alcohol-related problems. In addition, other universities have stepped up their campaigns to encourage all undergraduates to live on-campus. Any small change toward the goal of decreasing underage college drinking, as well as binge drinking, is a step in the right direction, and continued persistence toward these goals will result in positive outcomes.”
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as “a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 grams percent or more.” That generally happens when females consume four or more drinks within a two-hour span and men consume five or more drinks within a two-hour span.
Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center wholeheartedly supports the decision of colleges and universities that enact policies to prevent underage and binge drinking among their students. In addition, Mountainside has a comprehensive intervention program for those students who have, unwittingly, fallen into alcohol consumption patterns that have led to abuse.
