Alcoholism Treatment | Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center
A problematic economy brings with it many difficulties for individuals, including strained relationships and an increase in dangerous and risky behaviors.
The Health Economics Research Group at the University of Miami published a study that indicates that binge drinking increased as unemployment increased. With the increased numbers in binge drinking, other terrible problems occur individually and within families; in addition there are increased incidences of drunk driving.
“The outcomes of this study raise many questions,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab
and Alcoholism Treatment Center. “According to the study, as income decreases, money spent on alcohol increases. This could be due, in part, to the state of mind of the individual. For example, a person who loses his job or hasn’t had success in finding a job may become depressed and begin to self-medicate with alcohol. Interestingly, there are those who are employed who may binge drink in good economic times, perhaps indicating that, whatever the general economic condition of the country, the fear of loss of a job may influence their drinking patterns. By understanding these triggers, individuals can more closely monitor their alcohol consumption and hopefully prevent any type of alcohol dependence.”
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, binge drinking is defined as drinking four drinks, for men, or three drinks, for women over the course of two hours.
