The US pharmaceutical market's 2009 value of will have increased by 2010. The growth is slightly higher growth than that predicted by most analysts, with many believing the market would contract over 2009-2010 for the first time in 50 years. The outperformance of market expectations in spite of wider economic restraints has been due to an increase in prices and higher purchasing sensitivity on the on the part of retail pharmacy chains leading to better inventory management. Manufacturers' attempts to expand access to and knowledge of public programmes to assist patients, as well as their co-payment of subsidies have also helped sustain market growth throughout the downturn. Of these factors, the most significant factor is the pricing flexibility that has helped sustain revenues. Analyst Robert J. Easton remarked that the 2010 healthcare reforms will re
strain pricing increases, but added ‘in the mean time...the industry has continued to raise prices in a very, very substantial rate...and they're going to keep doing it as long as they can.' Those techniques will keep the industry growing through 2011. By 2012-2013, increased rebate payments and controls on pricing will begin to erode the growth rates of the industry. However in 2014 the measures set out in the 2010 health care reform will begin to take effect, with coverage widening.
In Europe, Plavix's sales have been undermined by the launch of a generic clopidogrel bisulphate by the Swiss company Acino. US law proved more favourable, adjudging that Plavix's patents cover all versions of the clopidogrel isomer, not solely the bisulphate salt. A June 2010 legal victory delayed the US release of Apotex's generic clopidogrel until November 2011. As well as fighting generic competition in the EU, the two companies have sought to expand Plavix's indications, with a Phase III trial of the drug in paediatric patients underway in 2009. They have also filed for EU and US approval of Plavix for preventing major vascular events in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. Plans for use of Plavix in a combination product with irbesartan and simvastatin were abandoned due to unpromising trial results, reports indicate.
