Fighting between members of rival drug cartels sparked a deadly riot at a prison in northern Mexico on Wednesday. Tamaulipas state officials confirmed the riot broke out at the prison in Altamira. Thirty-one inmates were killed and 13 others were injured. Authorities say homemade weapons were used by the inmates.
According to a security official speaking anonymously, it appears members of the Zetas cartel and the Gulf cartel were fighting over territory within the prison. Police and army soldiers stopped the riot and regained control of the prison.
Officials say 13 inmates have been arrested for their involvement in the riot. The incident is under investigation.
