Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has disabled their iTunes sync feature on the new Palm Pre smartphone, according to reports on Wednesday.
The iTunes sync feature was arguably the most appealing function on the new Palm Pre phone, which rivals Apple’s iPhone. Users of the recently released Pre had been able to download music on the phone by using Apple's free iTunes software.
However, Apple placed a stop on the feature Wednesday, which “disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre,” said Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr about the update.
Palm spokeswoman Leslie Letts said Apple's move is a "direct blow to their users, who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience," according to Associated Press.
The removal of the iTunes feature is the latest example of tensions between Apple and Palm, which since June has been led by Jon Rubinstein, the former executive behind the iPod. Rubinstein became Palm's executive chairman in October 2007.
The $200 Pre includes a "multi-touch" screen like Apple's iPhone, letting users do things like pinch photos to zoom in and out. Apple was granted a patent in January related to certain multi-touch functions, though the effects on Palm are unclear.
