Hashmut Effendi is simply referred to as the "Mother Teresa of our time" by her peers and outlying global community. Her personal and international effort to abolish poverty and terror within the countries of the Middle East is one near and dear to millions around the world.

Hashmut Effendi founded House of Charity in 1996 a nonprofit, charitable organization dedicated to improve the quality of life for the underprivileged and impoverished children and youth of Greater Houston and surrounding areas.

The House of Charity's mission is to help as many indigent children as possible regardless of geographic location. Hospitals, clinics, doctors, nurses and other medical staff in Houston and neighboring areas are working collaboratively and around the clock in an effort to turn this objective into a reality. The goal of this program is to provide high quality donated medical and surgical treatments internationally to impoverished children of all nationalities. Effendi and House of Charity are working to fill that need through various programs and initiatives, including:

  • Providing housing, transportation, meals, daily necessities and recreation for children during convalescence at the House of Charity Healing Home;
  • Collaborating with clinics, local hospitals, doctors and nurses;
  • Setting up Medical Missions of volunteer medical and surgical health professionals to countries around the world where children and young adults are treated free of charge, and training local doctors and nurses to contribute to these missions.
  • Establishing free clinics for Burn Revision and Cleft Lip and Palate surgery, and developing strategies and logistics to operate them effectively;
  • Upgrading Charity Hospitals around the world;
  • Focusing on caring for children 18 years and under; and
  • Providing care and treatment without regard to religious beliefs or cultural differences.

The House of Charity believes that every child deserves educational supplies and that all teachers should have the tools to provide exceptional learning opportunities for all students regardless of economic background. The Educational Resource Center, introduced in 2004, is focused on providing students in our high poverty schools with the same opportunity to learn as those in our more affluent schools.

The Educational Resource Center is also focused on having a direct impact with students by operating a volunteer-run free store for teachers, which will be stocked with supplies donated by the community. Through the ERC, schools will have access to school supplies and uniforms at any time year-round. All of the supplies, new and used, will be collected from businesses and individuals in our community and stocked in a unique warehouse for Houston Area Public School teachers - where everything will be free all year round! We hope to expand its horizon so that it will touch the lives of thousands of children in need and help teachers create an exceptional learning environment.

On a daily basis, parents must make heart-wrenching choices. Purchasing school supplies is simply a luxury most families cannot afford. To bridge the gap, dedicated teachers spend an average of $800 per year to provide the basic and necessary supplies that their students need.

The ultimate purpose is to make a significant impact in the communities we serve by providing essential supplies for all students to perform, excel and grow. By contributing any items in our Needs List you can help make a difference in a child's life.

Together, we can indeed make a difference!
