milliamp.com technicians alter the touch-sensitivity of an iPhone 3G home button at a disabled customers’ request.
The iPhone repair business milliamp.com had an unusual request from a customer recently: make the Home Button on Apple’s iPhone 3GS easier to press.
“We encounter a lot of unusual circumstance that result in the need for an iPhone or iPod repair, but this situation was definitely an attention-grabber.”, said Anthony Magnabosco, the owner of milliamp.com.
When Damian Marta, who suffers from a physical disability that severely limits his finger strength, recently upgraded from the 1st Generation iPhone to the newer iPhone 3GS, he immediately noticed that the Home Button on the iPhone 3GS was much stiffer than the first iPhone. When Damian contacted Apple about it, he was told that the newer iPhone 3GS was intentionally produced with a stiffer Home Button.
Damian, who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, then contacted iPhone repair site milliamp.com about his dilemma.
The Customer Service Agent from milliamp.com who took the phone call listened to Damian's story, discussed it with milliamp technicians, and then advised the customer to send in his device to see what we could do to help him out.
Because of the subjective nature of the customers’ requirement, milliamp.com workers passed his iPhone around from employee to employee asking, “Is this easier to push now?”. Several hours were spent working with the device. “It would be disingenuous to say that we got it right on the first try, but we were determined to give Damian an Phone 3GS with a Home Button that he could easily press.”, continued Magnabosco.
In the end, the iPhone repair company was able to reduce the amount of force needed to press the Home Button, and Damian was finally able to use his iPhone 3GS.
“I had a very unusual request that I needed help with. Because I'm physically disabled, I have very limited strength in my fingers and could not activate the Home Button. But Milliamp did a wonderful job making the button easier to push for me.”, said Mr Marta.
The technicians at milliamp.com perform iPhone screen replacements, solder in new iPhone batteries, and do a whole host of other tasks that require iPhone parts all day long, but improving the responsiveness of a part above and beyond what it was originally designed for proved a bit challenging. Increasing the diameter of the hole in which the Home Button sits, as well as modifying the component that lays underneath the black plastic Home Button to make it more flexible finally did the trick.
Damian continued, “Life can be frustrating sometimes when simple things such as using a cell phone is impossible, but it is the hand that I have been dealt.”.
Mr. Marta actually has another iPhone that he recently purchased that needs the same repairs, and it's on the way to milliamp.com for the extra attention it requires.
