Nearly a week after SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau
was killed by a male orca; new details on the circumstances of her death have
emerged.
In statements released by the Orange County, Florida sheriff’s
office, witnesses describe how the tragedy unfolded. “She was laying down on
out concrete walk area face-to-face performing a relationship session with the
whale. He bit down on a piece of her hair. Within a span of two seconds, she
was pulled into the pool unable to get her hair released from his mouth,” says
one employee.
The 12,300 pound whale name Tilikum continued to drag
Brancheau underwater and shake her violently.
Another trainer said “it took approximately 25 to 30 minutes
to get Dawn's body away.” Tilikum was lifted out of the water and his jaws were
pried open to free Brancheau’s body.
Brancheau, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.
