Popping the question may be tough. But buying an engagement ring can be even tougher if you don’t know what to look for or how much to spend, according to Shenoa and Co., one of the fastest growing online jewelers.
Shenoa offers some advice for grooms-to-be so shopping goes smoothly.
1. Buy a Break
Get your girlfriend to drop you some hints about the type of ring she likes. See if she’ll offer a comment on a friend’s ring. Most women love to talk about jewelry—especially diamonds. If you can’t manage to discreetly extract that information without letting anything on, perhaps you can solicit help from one of her friends.
2. Know your Budget
The accepted practice nowadays is to spend two months salary on an engagement ring. If you’re pulling in $3,000 a month, tradition would say you should be buying a ring worth about $6,000. Of course shopping online at a discount jeweler like Shenoa allows you spend less of your hard-earned money. Your Priest, Rabbi, Pastor or Justice of the Peace won’t be weighing the ring, asking for an appraisal or W-2. This is just a guide. Buy what you can afford.
3. Select a Shape
The center stone of a diamond ring comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Many women have a definite preference. Your girlfriend has been dreaming of this moment since watching Cinderella live “happily ever after.” She likely even has a vision of how her engagement ring might look. Here are the choices.
1. Round-it’s the most basic and traditional
2. Oval-an elongated circle
3. Pear-shaped like the fruit
4. Marquise-it’s pointed on both ends
5. Heart-it looks like a heart
6. Princess-shaped like a square
7. Emerald-cut like a rectangular
8. Trillion-in the shape of a triangle
Some rings appear larger even though they might weigh the same. For example, oval will appear larger than a round diamond.
4. Size Does Matter (but it’s not everything)
The size of a diamond is measured in carats. While size does matter, be careful not to choose a diamond on carat-weight alone. There’s also the cut, color and clarity to consider. Think overall quality.
“You could buy a 2-carat diamond ring,” says Scott Cowan, Chief Operating Officer for Shenoa, “but if the diamond ring fails to sparkle because of a marginal cut, is cloudy and a little yellowish then that may not be the ring you really want to give.”
