Sam Elliot: The Golden Compass controversy wont affect box office

Atlanta, GA 12/07/2007 11:14 PM GMT (FINDITT)

Sam Elliot said he doesn’t expect the controversy surrounding his new film ‘The Golden Compass’ to affect its run in the box office. If anything, Elliot says, it will cause more people to see the film and read the books it is based off of.

William A. Donohue, the head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, raised concerns over the film as he says it promotes atheism to children. He says the movie will encourage kids to read the books, which he believes is a story about a girl on a mission to kill God. Donohue says “the books denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the viruses of atheism.”

‘The Golden Compass’ is based on the first novel in ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy, which is written by proclaimed atheist Phillip Pullman.

“I think its total nonsense. It all boils down to one guy, William H. Donohue, the head of some organization called the Catholic League for religious and Civil Rights. He raised a big stink about ‘The Da Vinci Code’ as well,” says Elliot. “And this guy hasn’t even seen the movie. And I think at the same time he claimed that he didn’t need to.”

“I think more people will see the movie or read the books that would have otherwise if he hadn’t stirred this up,” Elliot added.

The film stars Nicole Kidman, Eva Green, Dakota Blue Richards, and Daniel Craig.
