Man Arrested 11 Years After Accused Kidnapping, Child Safe
Atlanta, Ga. 12/08/2007 05:12 PM GMT (FINDITT)
A man wanted in connection with the kidnapping of a nine-month-old boy in Phoenix, Arizona 11 years ago was apprehended by the FBI on Thursday in Peoria.
Walter Mitchell was the subject of a police warrant issued in April 1997 following the child’s abduction on Aug. 31, 1996. In July 1997 a federal warrant was issued for Mitchell yet it took more than a decade to track him down.
As it turned out he was still living in Arizona and had moved in with his parents in Peoria with the boy, less than 20 miles from the home he lived in 11 years ago. Mitchell was picked up by authorities at the house on Thursday and the now 12-year-old boy was placed in Child Protective Services.
Mitchell is scheduled to appear in court December 14. His bond is set at $63,000.
