Amelie Mauresmo Advances to Third Round at Australian Open Despite Ugly Second Set
Atlanta, Ga. 1/16/2008 04:29 PM GMT (FINDITT)
Amelie Mauresmo was far from sharp but the 2006 Australian Open champion did enough to beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), on Wednesday to advance to the third round at Melbourne Park.
Mauresmo needed ten match points in the second set to finally put away Shvedova, surprising because she had held a 5-1 advantage before letting that slip away.
There’s a lot that Mauersmo will need to improve on in her third round match if she is to capture her second Australian Open title. On Wednesday she committed 22 unforced errors and eight double faults, mistakes that nearly cost her the match.
