Rare Ganges River Dolphin Beat to Death by Fisherman

Atlanta, GA 1/30/2008 03:35 PM GMT (FINDITT)

A rare river dolphin was beaten to death by fisherman in Bangladesh. The men claimed they beat the Ganges River Dolphin to death because they had never seen “this kind of creature before.”

After killing the animal, the men tried to sell its body. When no one bought the rare fish, the men left its body outside a museum. Bangladesh Cetacean Diversity Project worker, Elisabeth Fahrni Mansur, said the animal will be an exhibit in the museum. “The animal was taken to a visitor center where it will be prepared for an exhibit,” she said.

The Ganges River Dolphin is classified as an endangered species as there are only 4,000 to 5,000 of the animals living. They are very rarely seen as they only come to the surface of the water to breathe.
