High School Phenom Brittney Griner Dunks With Ease
Atlanta, GA 2/12/2008 09:27 PM GMT (FINDITT)
Brittney Griner is the first girls basketball player who can dunk consistently.
Griner, a 6-foot-7 junior center at Nimitz H.S. in Aldine, TX, recently had a game in which she dunked twice.
Griner, who leads Texas 5A girls' basketball in points, rebounds and blocks, is the number two ranked junior in the nation, according to HoopGurlz.com. Griner has already committed to Baylor, becoming the star of the nation's best recruiting class for 2009 thus far. She picked Baylor over the Tennessee Lady Vols because it is closer to home.
Along with Griner, Baylor has received commitments by 6-1 guard Shanay Washington from Del Valle, TX and Jordan Madden, a 6-foot junior guard from East Poinsett County H.S. in Arkansas. Washington has been ranked in the top five by other recruiting services, while Madden is ranked No. 30 by HoopGurlz.com.
Madden will join Griner and 2010 Baylor commit Odessey Sims on the DFW Elite AAU team.
Griner has grown seven inches since her freshman year and her father expects her to tap out at 6-foot-10 or 6-foot-11. She wears a size 17 shoe in men's and boasts an 86-inch wingspan.
As a sophomore, Griner averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks per game for Nimitz, including six triple-doubles. Thus far this season, she have garnered a double-double in each game.
With Griner's prowess in dunking, she has become an Internet sensation as videos of her dunking have flooded the World Wide Web. However, it is evident that she is more than just a tall girl who can jump. Griner is a fundamentally sound basketball player. Only time will tell whether she is the next Candace Parker, but it is apparent that she plans to be around for a while.
