Atlanta Falcons Release Pro-Bowl Tight End Alge Crumpler
Atlanta, Ga. 2/15/2008 09:00 PM GMT (FINDITT)
The Atlanta Falcons took a major step towards their rebuilding process after letting go of their popular tight end Alge Crumpler along with defensive tackle Rod Coleman, offensive tackle Wayne Gandy and quarterback Byron Leftwich.
Thomas Dimitroff, the new general manager of the Falcons, stated “These decisions weren't easy, but we felt they were necessary to build a team in the long-term best interest of the Falcons and its fans.”
Atlanta is in the process of trying to bury a 2007 season in which they lost Michael Vick to prison and finished the year at 4-12. Along the way their head coach, Bobby Petrino, quit and several veterans expressed a desire to get out.
Crumpler had been a major component in the Falcons offensive system but was slowed last year by injuries and his $5.1 million contract was seen as a problem for Atlanta’s desire to build with fresh legs.
Crumpler was a four-time Pro-Bowler while with the Falcons.
