Yesterday, San Diego City Council candidate Stephen Whitburn reinforced his commitment to help homeowners facing foreclosure in San Diego. This Wednesday Mr. Whitburn’s campaign reiterated his commitment to the Stronger Neighborhoods Initiative seeking financial institutions likewise affected by the mortgage crisis to contact his campaign to organize a coordinated effort.

The Stronger Neighborhoods Initiative is a response to the mortgage crisis in San Diego and particularly District Three for which Stephen is running for City Council. “The loss of a home is more than just one family’s crisis,” explains Candidate Whitburn, “The family suffers loss of its home; the homeowner suffers long-term damage to his or her credit score; the neighbors suffer a decrease in the area’s property values; the lender suffers a hit to its bottom line, and ultimately as a result of these accumulated negatives, all of San Diego suffers.”

Financial institutions affected by the mortgage and foreclosure crisis are encouraged to contact Stephen Whitburn’s campaign to participate in an organized effort to work with families facing a foreclosure. Lenders, brokers, and banks can call 619-781-4313 to reach Candidate Whitburn’s campaign manager.

Stephen Whitburn was joined by Congressman Bob Filner (D - CA) and members of the local business community, Marcos Chavez of A Plus financial, Luis Sanchez of A Plus Financial, and Alexander Capio of Lendinggateway.com to speak about the foreclosure crisis and outline the Stronger Neighborhoods initiative. During this conference, last Wednesday, Congressman Filner and Candidate Whitburn called on San Diego City Council and Congress to stand up and help protect neighborhoods because currently local and federal governments are not doing enough to address this crisis.

“The Stronger Neighborhoods Initiative, which I am proposing today, includes three things that we can do now to tackle this problem,” said Whitburn as he introduced the initiative, “Number one; the City should require that any bank holding a foreclosed property maintain it in accordance with the municipal code.  Doing so will protect neighborhood property values. Number two; the City should immediately create a task force made up of mortgage experts and community leaders to assess how the city can help residents who are at risk of foreclosure. And number three; the City should aggressively publicize a mortgage crisis toll free hotline, established and funded by financial institutions and non-profit organizations.” He called on the city to take these steps immediately and work with the financial institutions that also have a stake in the foreclosure crisis.
