While the number one pick of the 2008 NFL Draft was a foregone conclusion with the Miami Dolphins already signing Michigan’s OT Jake Long the rest of the board was up in the air until the St Louis Rams were on the clock.
It didn’t take long for the Rams to announce they would be drafting DE Chris Long of Virginia. St. Louis found Long to be a better fit than LSU’s Glenn Dorsey who fell to the Kansas City Chiefs at number five.
The Atlanta Falcons used their number three pick to take Boston College’s Matt Ryan and he will now become the new face of the franchise, finally putting to rest the idea of a Michael Vick return.
Darren McFadden, though by many to be the best overall player in the 2008 NFL Draft, went to the Oakland Raiders. McFadden put up huge numbers as a running back for Arkansas last year and is seen as a player who could make an Adrian Peterson-like impact in his rookie season.
With the number six pick the New York Jets snagged Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston who should fit in nicely with their defensive scheme.
The New Orleans Saints moved up the board with a trade involving the New England Patriots and took DT Sedrick Ellis of USC. Jacksonville took the same approach and traded with the Baltimore Ravens to land Florida’s DE Derrick Harvey.
Considered by many to be the best OLB in the 2008 NFL Draft Keith Rivers went to the Cincinnati Bengals at number nine while the New England Patriots took OLB Jerod Mayo of USC with the tenth pick of the 2008 NFL Draft.
