Santa Cruz Fires Could Claim More Than 10,000 Acres
Atlanta, Ga. 5/22/2008 06:29 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)
Fire officials fear that the Santa Cruz wildfire, know being called the Summit Fires, could destroy more than 10,000 acres before they are capable of containing the blaze.
The rapid speed in which the fires have burned has already resulted in more than 2,000 acres lost with zero containment being reported. At least 20 buildings have been lost in the Northern California area around the Santa Cruz Mountains.
With sustained winds of 20-30 mph and gusts of 40 mph the fires have become unpredictable, leaving firefighters with little opportunity to contain the blaze. There have been mass evacuations in the area including several children’s camps and schools.
