Atlanta, GA 6/04/2008 10:45 PM GMT (FINDITT)
Kyle Skipworth, the star catcher from Patriot High School in Riverside, California, was named the 2008 Gatorade National Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Skipworth, who stands 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, was already named the Gatorade State Player of the Year. He is expected to be a first-round selection in Thursday's MLB Draft.
This season, Skipworth set California state record by compiling a streak of 18 hits in 18 consecutive official at-bats. He also reached base in 25 straight plate appearances during that span.
Skipworth led Patriot High School to a 27-3 record and the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division IV state postseason tournament semifinals in 2008.
Skipworth finished the season with a .543 batting average and produced 13 home runs, 51 runs scored, 47 RBIs, a 1.117 slugging percentage and a .657 on-base percentage. Skipworth hit safely in 25 of Patriot's 30 games and also compiled 15 multi-hit games.
Skipworth, who has a 3.81 grade point average, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Arizona State University. He joins fellow standouts Jaff Decker of Sunrise Mountain High (Peoria, Ariz.), Brad Hand of Chaska High (Chaska, Minn.) and Eric Hosmer of American Heritage High (Plantation, Fla.) as Arizona State baseball recruits to be named 2007-08 Gatorade State Players of the Year.
