Ahmad Suradji Executed in Indonesia For Murder of 42 Women
Atlanta, GA 7/11/2008 03:11 PM GMT (FINDITT)
Indonesia executed a man convicted of killing 42 women. Ahmad Suradji was killed by a firing squad late Thursday for a series of ritual slayings he believed would give him magical powers.
The 57-year-old was arrested in May 1997 after a body was discovered in a field close to his home. The bodies of 41 other women were later found nearby. His wife, Tumini, was also arrested and sentenced to death for assisting with the killings. Her sentence was later reduced to life in prison.
Authorities say the women went to Suradji because they believed he was a sorcerer. He would then bury them up to the waist, telling them that it was a part of the ritual, and strangle them. Suradji buried them with their heads pointing towards his home and told authorities he believed the murders would give him magical powers.
Suradji was executed despite an appeal. “He appeared resigned to his fate. His final wish was to see his wife. We fulfilled this,” said the Attorney General Office’s spokesman Bonaventura Nainggolan.
