Michael Phelps did his part to boost the television ratings for NBC during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and now the station will reward the swimmer and the sport with an agreement to televise the World Swimming Championships in Rome next year.

Phelps captured eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games, propelling the ratings for NBC well beyond what they expected. As Phelps chased his goal of eight gold medals millions of viewers tuned into NBC to watch the 23-year-old attack the pool.

As part of their agreement NBC will also televise the 2010 and 2011 national swimming championships, events Phelps has said he would like to take part in.
