Texas Teacher Kaleb Tierce Offered Good Grade for Sex

Texas high school teacher Kaleb Tierce was indicted Thursday on three counts of attempted improper relationship with a student. The 26-year-old, who taught English at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, surrendered to authorities Friday and was released on $30,000 bond.

The charges stem from attempted sexual relationships with three students. He allegedly asked one student if she would have sex for a better grade.

The investigation was sparked by a complaint over a book Tierce required his ninth-grade class to read. The book, ‘Child of God’ by Cormac McCarthy, was about a murderer who had sex with his victim’s bodies. A 14-year-old’s parents complained to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office that the material was too graphic for teens. Tierce was not charged with providing harmful material to a minor.

During the investigation into the book complaints, allegations surfaced that Tierce and a former student has an “inappropriate relationship.” He also allegedly asked another student “what she would be willing to go for a better grade” and asked a third girl for “sexual favors.” All of the encounters happened in 2005.

Tierce was put on paid leave last year. His contract was not renewed for the current school year. Tierce’s teacher certification could be revoked. If convicted of all three third-degree felony charges, Tierce could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison.
