Grammy Award winning blues musician Willie Perkins has died. According to a post on his official website, Perkins passed away Monday at his Austin, Texas home. Perkins’ agent of 15 years, Hugh Southard, says the cause of death was cardiac arrest. Perkins, who was also known as Pinetop, was 97.
"It is with deep sadness that we announce Pinetop Perkins passed away," the website post read.
Perkins’ career spanned 7 decades and included 14 albums. He performed with the likes of Ike Turner, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Nighthawk and Muddy Waters. Earlier this year, Perkins became the oldest person to win a Grammy when he won the award for best traditional blues album for “Joined at the Hip: Pinetop Perkins and Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith.” He also won Grammys in 2005 and 2007.
