Mistrial Declared in John Travolta Extortion Case
Atlanta, GA 10/22/2009 01:58 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)
A mistrial has been declared in the John Travolta extortion
case. A Bahamian judge declared a mistrial Wednesday because of juror misconduct.
The decision followed a local politician’s announcement that
one of the defendants, former senator Pleasant Bridgewater, had been acquitted
-- before jurors had reached a verdict.
"This came out of the clear blue; this was so
weird," says Mike Ossi, one of Travolta’s lawyers.
Senior Supreme Court Judge Anita Allen has ordered a
retrial, but it is unclear if the case will ever be retried.
Bridgewater and paramedic Tarino Lightbourn are accused
of attempting to extort $25 million from Travolta using medical records from
the death of the actor’s son Jett Travolta. Jett, 16, died on January 2
following a seizure in his family’s vacation home on Grand Bahama Island.
Travolta has not commented.
