Sotherby’s/SCP Begins Auction for Barry Bonds Home Run Home Run Balls

Atlanta, Ga. 8/29/2007 03:57 AM GMT (FINDITT)

Sotherby’s/SCP began the electronic bidding for the Barry Bonds record tying 755th career home run ball and record breaking 756th home run ball on Tuesday with the opening bid on number 756 starting at $100,000.

It’s not the first time Bonds has had a historic home run ball auctioned off by Sotherby’s/SCP. When Bonds passed Babe Ruth with home run number 715 the ball fetched an impressive $220,000 while his 700th home run ball was auctioned off for $102,000.

With estimates for the record-breaking ball hovering around the $500,000 mark it could be a nice payday for Matt Murphy. It was the 21-year-old from New York who came away from the scrum with the historic ball after Bonds connected off the Washington Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik.

As for Adam Hughes, the 34-year-old who grabbed the home run ball that tied Bonds with Hank Aaron, he could be looking at close to $200,000 when the final bid is made.

Sotherby’s/SCP will keep the auction live until Sept. 15 when the wining bids are announced.
