It Takes One to Know One

Parrothead Novelist Puts the Spotlight on Jimmy Buffett Fans

March 27, 2006 Nashville, Tennessee, G. Allen 3/27/2006 02:55 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)

It was only a matter of time before someone wrote a novel starring the colorful Parrotheads.  Within a short time span, not just one, but two novels hit the stores with Parrotheads as main characters.  I had the chance to catch up with one of the writers, Nikki Wood, over the weekend by phone.

First let me say it is a pleasure to get a chance to talk with you.

The honor is all mine.  This is my first interview.  Please excuse the nerves.

No problem, how did you come up with your novel Tempting the Tempest?

Without getting into too lengthy of an answer, let's just say I came to a crossroads in my life and decided to take the road less travelled.  Writing a novel had always been a dream and when I found myself with free time, I decided to make the dream come true.

Why Parrotheads?

That's an easy one.  I am a Parrothead and have been for almost as long as I can remember.  Jimmy Buffett music provides escape from the every day strains of life and inspires listeners to get out and chase their dreams.  As organized groups, the parrotheads do a great deal of charity work and make their communities better places to live.  You ask why parrotheads, I ask why not.

You feature a song titled "Coast of my Heart" in the novel.  Does it have any special meaning or do you just like it?

Both.  There is very special meaning to the song.  Two of my friends wrote it together.  It is on the Flyin' Memphis album. There are links to the website where it can be purchased and a brief sound clip of the song on my website.  I love the song.  It's catchy and sweet.  I'd love for Jimmy Buffett or Kenny Chesney to pick it up.  It could be a big hit for either of them.

What is the most difficult part of the whole process of getting published?

The hardest part. . .I'd have to say getting publicity and letting people know the novel is out there.  New books hit the market every day.  It is hard to keep one in front of the crowd unless you are an established writer like Stephen King or Nora Roberts.  Hopefully one day I'll crack the best seller list, but right now I'll take any publicity I can get big or small.  It's the same with the song.  Get the product in front of the consumers.  The publicity is my least favorite part of the process. I'd much rather just write and not try to sell myself to anyone who will listen.

Do you know if Jimmy Buffett is aware of your novel?

Honestly, I have no idea. I imagine someone who works for him has stumbled across it. gave me a big plug and we all believe Jimmy lurks around the message boards every now and then.

Last question, where can people interested in your novel pick up a copy?

Tempting the Tempest is available through all the major online bookstores and through my publisher, PublishAmerica.  There are links on my website that will take you straight to Amazon and Barnes and Noble for ordering.  The web address is  Please sign the guest book if you drop by.  I enjoy reading the messages and try to reply as time allows.  I also have my very first book signing scheduled for April 8th from 2-4 PM at the Barnes and Noble in Spanish Fort, Alabama.  I invite everyone in the area to come out and meet me and get a signed copy of the book.  I'm not sure how many copies will be on hand, so interested parties may want to call ahead to reserve one.

Tempting the Tempest

William “Bull” O’Malley is an intense, focused businessman.  His latest project, a cable news channel, is launching just as a hurricane bears down on the gulf coast.  He needs just the right reporter to cover the story.  One who can be professional, yet captivating.  One reporter stands out about the rest, Maddy McGehee.

Maddy McGehee is an aspiring reporter.  Her waitressing job that paid the bills also offered a huge story, launching her into the spotlight.  With job offers galore, she was intrigued by just one, covering a hurricane heading for her childhood home.

Would the secrets she left there come back to haunt her at the worst possible moment?  Could she and her crew along with her new boss survive the serious hurricane?  Would love rise up out of the ruins or would destruction rule the day?  These questions will be answered as they attempt to tempt the temptress.
